Late, But Still Posted

Belly picture from the day I turned 8 weeks. I am probably thinner this week simply because 9 weeks has been the most puking I have ever done during any pregnancy. I am SICK, I mean, really sick this week. I passed out alone with my 3 little ones 3 days ago, when I woke up on the floor, I realized they were playing with a jar of pickled jalapenos and a knife. It was very scary. I suppose I was severely dehydrated and that's why it happened. I did call my dr and he was supposed to call in zofran for me yesterday which never happened so now I get to harass them on Monday and beg for the meds. I also got the call that I failed my 1 hour glucose tolerance test....like miserably failed it soooooo it looks like I go for the 3 hour as soon as I feel I can do it without puking. Ah the joys of pregnancy. To be very honest, being an unplanned pregnancy, this one has been really tough on me emotionally. I feel like a spoiled brat to even say it, but I am not coming to terms to well with this. Being so sick is just adding to the misery 10 fold. If I could, I would cryogenically freeze this baby for 5 years until I felt more ready for it. This is just tough. From my Dr's best guess, it looks as if I had gotten pregnant while still on my period so for those who chart to avoid, good luck! I thought I knew my body pretty well and we avoided during the "fertile" time like normal, but this time my fertile time came a whole week earlier than it was supposed to. :( I know I will love this sweet little baby when it gets here, I just truly hate pregnancy and believe this will be my last. Nate and I are considering options right now to either do an IUD or have him get a vasectomy. If any of you have used an IUD, please give me your thoughts and opinions about it. I also would like to know which one you had, Paraguard or Mirena and your likes/dislikes. Thanks so much!

Mirena destroyed my thyroid. And I lost two babies because of it. That is the problem with IUD. They can prevent pregnancy but they can also prevent a fertilized egg from emplanting. So I guess it depends on how you view life. Also I know someone whose Mirena perforated her uterus and she had to have surgery to have it removed. I bled a lot and the string was very uncomfortable.

I have the Paraguard. Good in that there's no hormones, bad in that my period is super heavy 2-3 days a month. Like I need the largest tampon ever made plus an overnight pad and I need to change both every 90 minutes during the worst of it. I'm really considering Essure- a coil in the fallopian tubes that causes scarring. If I had really thought about it, I should have gotten my tubes tied after my last baby.

I had Mirena. I had a hard time losing weight on it and my hair fell out. When I had it removed, I felt like a whole new person. I didn't realize how much it had affected my mood. I felt more energized and happier with out.

Congrats on the pregnancy, Janis!

Not me but I have a friend and my sister with Paraguard and both love it. My friend is in year 4 with it and slight to no periods and my sis has very light periods with it as well. I have 3 kids and am feeling done, done, done so my DH agreed to a V but my youngest is 2 so we waited a while to make the decision. I would suggest to wait until the new baby is at least a year to make a perm. decision.

If your hubby will get a vasectomy let him. Everyone that I know who has had an IUD has hated them. Painful, unusual bleeding. Some of them got Pregnant anyways!! One friend got preggo, got it removed and lost the baby at 4 mos!!! Are you still breastfeeding at all? I know after I was done breastfeeding my periods were normal but I got pregnant at unusual times. Right after my period and when I was finally supposed to start my period. Craziness!!! Good luck and I hope you really think about it before you do anything permanent. Birth control pillsIf your hubby will get a vasectomy let him. Everyone that I know who has had an IUD has hated them. I got the paraguard 2 months ago and it has been awesome so far. I do have one heavy period day but nothing unmanagable at all. my doctor said that women with light periods don't usually have a hard time at all, while those who have really heavy periods normally have a harder time. But from what I've heard and read that's only for 3 months usually while your body tries to regulate the lining. I can't do hormone stuff so it has been great for us!

I've had both. I much prefer the Paragard. The periods are a tiny bit heavier, but that's way less of a big deal then the nasty Mirena side effects. I love my Paragard and it's perfect for bridging the gap until we are comfortable with sterilization (we don't want anymore, we just can't quite close that door all the way yet - it doesn't feel right).

Omg. Whatever you do, DON'T use an IUD. Sure, some people have no side effects and good for them. But the ones that DO get the side effects will sometimes suffer from permanent hormonal imbalances such that discontinuing the IUD has lingering consequences. Messing with your hormones is a scary business.

IUDs are a good choice for a lot of women. Mirena typically makes periods lighter and some women will have no periods. Paragard often makes periods heavier and a little more crampy, so it depends how your periods are and how you feel about having synthetic progesterone (the type of hormone in the mirena) in your body.

With either one, it's normal to have irregular cramping or bleeding for up to 3-6 months, that's just your body reacting to having something unusual inside it.

I know several people who have both types and love them. The thing about iuds is that they are the most effective form of birth control other than abstinence and they are very easily reversible. Most people find that their fertility returns immediately after having the iud removed.Side effects other than the period ones I just mentioned are very rare, unless you are allergic to synthetic progesterone (Mirena) or copper and possibly nickel (paragard).

It is true that it is possible for the IUD to function by preventing implantation of a fertilized egg, so if that is an issue for you it might not be a good choice.

Sorry this is so long, I work in women's reproductive health. Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions.

My friend's IUD got out of place and she is now due in 3 weeks with TRIPLETS! I would say vasectomy.
