Summer Brings Busy and Fun

We have so much planned now that the season is changing and weather is finally warming up. Its normally warm much sooner than June here in SoCal so its been a long winter, skipping spring altogether. I have begun soaking the plot in our yard where we will be rototilling tomorrow and mixing in topsoil to make our garden. We bought all the seeds yesterday so we are ready to create a beautiful garden complete with prize-sized pumpkins(or so we hope). We will be growing quite a variety this year. Our topsy turvy already is growing tomatoes and peppers, however we will be planting more of each in the ground. I also have basil and chives growing on my kitchen counters, but those we will also plant outside. We even plan to grow sunflowers this year and we will harvest the seeds and package them in handmade packages and tie a cute sunflower poem to them to give away at Christmastime. I am really excited about our garden because we became wishy-washy as to whether we even wanted to spend the time doing it this year. I decided that we should though. There is too much beauty and joy to loose in not doing a garden.

Next on the agenda is of course camping. Major bummer, all the rain seeped in through a tiny hole we didn't know we had in our camping trailer's roof and damaged the entire roof. It also seeped down into the walls and they are all filled with mildew. I believe we are going to cut our losses and sell the trailer as is for cheap. Its a real bummer though so we had to purchase a tent and airbed. We have everything else for camping thankfully. I did get one frivolous purchase though, a screen house. I LOVE being able to sit in one of those for meals while camping. I don't really enjoy sharing my meals with bugs and gnats! I am pretty excited about that purchase. We will hopefully finish up our garden tomorrow and then take off for our 3 day camping adventure Sunday right after church.

Of course summer couldn't be summer without all our homeschool group's fun activities. We got free passes to the fair for the end of summer, free parking and 9 free rides for each child. We also have lots of outings to water parks, swimming pools and lagoons with our homeschool group all free or very discounted. Our group stays very active during the summer, which is really a blessing. And, it couldn't be summer without the weeklong Vacation Bible Blast at church for the kids the end of this month. Church is really active this summer as well with activities like summer concerts, family movie nights in pjs(going to see Up next week) and a family camping trip planned for September. We are looking forward to a very busy, but fun summer. We plan to keep it as low cost as possible and just enjoy the beautiful warm weather.

You didn't think I would really end this post without an update did you? Okay so we finish week 5 of Sonlight today and are still enjoying church each week. I am on day 20 of my 90 days to becoming a proverbs 31 woman. The chorepacks are the biggest blessing to come into my life more recently. I really cannot sing enough praises about the chorepacks and the Yes Mam, Yes Sir chart(idea also taken from the Duggars book). Between those two things, I hardly recognize my well mannered children anymore:)

Can I just say.....

BEST thing since sliced bread! Yes, they work and they work so well. This is the BEST book I've ever read on chores and it does take a bit to get through it all and it takes even more effort to make your master chore list and go down and divy out all the chores to yourself, hubby and kids, but in the end, its so effective and its makes for smoooooth, cleaaaaaaaan days ahead. The up-front work has transformed our lives. Now, there is virtually no work for me. It took away all the headaches of chores. I am one happy mama. You can order it directly from here http://www.titus2.com/ecommerce/products/prod_listing.php/1150. It comes with enough stuff to do 4 chore packs, but I went to staples for 8 bucks and bought another large pack of more so that each child has a saturday only chorepack as well as a daily chorepack. This Christ-based chore system is truly amazing, I found out about it while reading the Duggars book.

Baby Preparation

We went out and and got some things to prep for Madelynn's arrival finally. I haven't been too worried about it since we have so much left from Kenna, but they are actually born in two different seasons so clothes are a bit more of a challenge and we needed another single stroller so that I can sling/moby Maddy while pushing Kenna in something lightweight for quick trips with all the kiddos. I have found tons of clothes at a thrift shop over the last few months, but even still, I felt like she deserved her own little wardrobe with some new things in it. I shopped some great sales at Carters and Children's place and finally I feel we are ready for this baby. I of course, still need to do all the washing, but beyond that, we are ready! Its so exciting to have all the preparation done and just sit back and wait.

We Made Cheese!

The items needed to make cheese
The curds and whey
Seperating the curds into cheesecloth
hanging the cheesecloth above the stockpot to drip away excess whey
The cheese!

We were eating cheese the other night and the kids said, "Hey, I wonder how cheese is made." Aha, a perfect moment to jump on. We went to the computer and watched the first youtube video about cheese making that we found. It was how to make Farmers Cheese. It looked so easy that we decided to go the next day and grab the "goods" to make it ourselves. Everyone took turns making it. It was a ton of fun. You can find exact ingredients and the youtube movie on foodwishes.org. Oh and the cheese was VERY tasty!

An Old Hobby Made Anew

Getting the machine all threaded and ready
Pinning squares together
Kayla taking her first shot at sewing
Tanner is a professional. I mean, this kid is seriously a lean mean sewing machine haha
And Wyatt man(Everett ran away before I caught him to get a pic)
What we completed today, so far!

Sewing was a hobby I had in late gradeschool. I was really into it and self taught myself everything I know about machines, sewing etc through lots of trial and error. As a teen, I reignited my passion, sewing tons of baby blankets for Kayla(as I was pregnant at the time), sewing couch pillows, curtains and other neat things for Nate and I's first home we would be moving to when he joined the military. I have sewed on and off through our marriage, but my machine has been collecting a lot of dust lately. I decided around Christmas to start collecting fabrics from thrift shops along with lace, ribbons, thread and other crafty things so I could start sewing again. I was enticed to pull it out this afternoon after church. I had no idea what to make, but the kids quickly came to my side to see what all the fuss was about. Before I knew it, we were all taking turns stitching squares we cut out into a blanket for baby Maddy. We are going to keep working on it until its all done and wash it and set it aside for her when she arrives. Its so sweet that Madelynn will have a quilt made with so much love by so many hands just for her. It wont be perfect to the craftmans eye I am certain as everyone is learning and I am kind of relearning again myself, but I can assure you that it will be just PERFECT to us! I can't wait to see the finished product. We are even planning on going down to Joannes and grabbing some silk ribbon edge to put on it when its final because all my kids have always loved silk on their blankie edges to rub and they thought Maddy might like that too. How thoughtful! I love my kids and my life and I wouldnt trade it for a billion bucks!

Green Eggs and Ham

Kayla, my little farmer girl, went out for her daily chicken check and she came flying in the house in excitement. The last of our chickens has finally begun to lay eggs and Jeepie is a special kinda chicken cause she lays GREEN eggs! The kids were all really tickled to see this egg. We officially have 3 laying hens now, but we will be getting many more as well a horse, come spring when we move into our new home on an acre. Can I just say that raising chickens from baby chicks all the way to laying hens has been one of the most awesome experiences for our family.....it rocks!

What did we do with 5 gallons of apples you wonder?

Getting ready to heat that caramel
dipping the apples
mmmm
Tanner enjoying a yummy apple
Nate peeling, slicing and coring with our old fashion corer/peeler/slicer
The last caramel apple, 2 of the pies and the ciders....mmm
the waste bag....not much for 5 gallons of apples ey?
worm infested waste

Well I didn't get pics of all the final products because some were eatin up before I had a chance(caramel apples) and I froze one of the pies, but of 5 gallons worth of apples, we made 2 gallons of cider, 3 pies(REALLLLLLY good ones I might add) and 10 caramel apples. There was no waste. What peels were taken off for pie apples, were thrown into the juicer for cider and in the end, we had a wee lil bag of a few rotten....worm infested cores and about 1 gallon of mulch that we took out and fed to our trees and flowers in the yard. I feel so happy about the fact that we were so unwasteful with so many apples.

The Apple Pie Recipe

Crust (makes 2 shells...top and bottom basically or 2 for pumpkin pie)

2 and 1/4 C. of flour

1/2 cup oil

1/2 tsp salt

6 tbsp milk

The Pie

7-8 peeled, sliced and cored apples

butter

3/4 C. sugar

1/4 C. Honey

lotsa cinnamon

The way I did it: I browned the apples a tad in a pan with butter, some sugar and cinnamon. I then dumped them in a waiting pie crust. After that, I poured the honey, sugar, and cinnamon on them evenly and laid the top crust over. Press the crusts together to make cutsey crust finger marks and then take an egg white and brush the top of the pie. Bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes. YUMMMMM Best pie ever. Oh and no, NOT diabetic friendly!

Pumpkin Patch 2008

Kenna was driving the pumpkin wheelbarrow machine hehe
Nate and I(13 weeks preggs-getting a tad thicker)
Riding the racecar, golf cart, pull ride
Stuck in the corn maze
Taking a ride to get pumpkins
Look at the prize picked pumpkins
Kenna with her wee wittle pumpkin
I just love him
and him
and her
and him
and apparently, she loves me too! :0)
Wyatt and a sheep
Tanner having a hayday...literally!
Wyatt had a lotta fun with the animals
Everett loved the llamas most
Me with the kids on the Hay Castle-How blessed am I?

Well the pictures tell all! What a long, fun afternoon. I wore Kenna for most the time, but after having the urge to pee for so long, I asked Nate to help out haha. I think wearing her on top of the uterus and baby pressing on my bladder, made for an interesting feeling of needing to pee nonstop! The weather was beautifully chilly and crisp and there was more fun than the kids knew what to do with. After finally pickin our pumpkins, Tanner had a typical 3yo/had too much fun, meltdown. :0) We forgive him! hehe. Oh yeah and my hair....I went blonde for anyone wondering!
